Finger Update

I went to the doctor again this morning and saw my finger after surgery for the first time. Apparently I was ghostly white when they took the bandage off because the nurse told me not to look and covered my finger with gauze for the x-rays. When the doctor came in she convinced me to look because I was sitting down. Not too bad, but at the same time nasty. The pins are sticking out a little more than I expected. The doctor says everything is healing fine. I get the pins out on Thursday, October 16, just a little over 2 weeks. I start physical therapy on the middle joint Thursday and will go 2-3 times a week for 5 weeks. I chose this picture because it is the least disgusting and my sister got access to my blog in Myanmar the other day and I don't want her to pass out :)

My Birthday Visit to Wilmington

I am finally getting around to looking at the pictures we took over Labor Day Weekend in Wilmington.  Of course we had to go to Carolina Beach State Park, because it is Nala's favorite place.  Here are a few pictures from the weekend.

Flag Football....Never Again

It just occurred to me that I had not posted anything about my finger.  On Tuesday, September 2 I was at flag football practice (yes I am on a co-rec team with a coach that practices) and we were doing a flag pulling drill.  I went to grab a flag and my finger got caught in a teammates shorts.  He pulled one way and I pulled the other.  My finger at the top joint went with him, but the rest of my finger went with me.  I immediately fell to the ground and grabbed my finger and pushed it back (not a pleasant feeling), but I knew I had to do that because if I saw my finger I was going to pass out.  My coach and teammates decided it was probably just a jam so I continued practicing.  I am playing with mostly undergraduate students who are nine almost ten years younger than me, so I couldn't be the old wimpy lady and kept practicing.  In only a few minutes my finger was too swollen to move, so I stayed on the field but didn't catch or pull any more flags.  I got home that night at around 9:30 and immediately iced it, while Kyle was telling me that it didn't hurt and I was just being a baby.
The next morning my finger was huge and blue so I decided to go to the doctor.  I called a few orthopedic doctors and they told me to go to an urgent care to see if it was even broken before coming in, because urgent care could get me in immediately.  So I went to the urgent care and the x-rays showed my finger was broken in a few different spots.  They made an appointment for Thursday with the Orthopedic doctor for me.  I brought the dvd of my x-rays over and met with the doctor who said you have two choices: have surgery or never be able to bend your finger again.  Of course I opted with the surgery.  On Friday I went for a CT scan and on Monday morning I was in for surgery.
Right below the top joint of my middle finger the bone was broken and the bone pieces had actually moved.  So the result of surgery was five pins in my finger.  The pins are sticking out of my finger, but it is bandaged so I can't see them.  I have the x-rays of my finger with the pins and I'll try to post those tomorrow.
Surgery went fine, but that night and the next day were awful.  I never knew a finger could hurt so bad.  I go back to the doctor on the 25th to see what is next.  Physical therapy with or without pins.  Here are two pics that Kyle took the day of my surgery.

Productive Scrapbooking Weekend

Luckily my finger doesn't hinger my scrapbooking.  I only have two months to get Jen's wedding scrapbook complete.  Here are some pages I did this weekend.  The weather was really hot, around 95, and my finger hurts pretty bad outside so I tried to stay in.

Grammy and Grampy Rest In Peace

Here is a page I did this morning during tropical storm hanna without being able to use my left middle finger.  I haven't added any journal writing to the page yet...
